TEHRAN (ANA)- Specialists of a knowledge-based company in Iran succeeded in producing a collagen-based dressing which speeds up healing of patients' wounds.
“The advanced Tabaderm collagen matrix dressing with a structure similar to human skin, by means of biopolymers used in the structure of the dressing like collagen and moisture management, accelerates the wound healing process,” Mahmoud Qafqazi, the managing director of the knowledge-based company.
“The use of biodegradable and biocompatible natural polymers similar to the extracellular matrix by stimulating and inducing the wound healing process is considered a big step to repair the damaged tissue,” he added.
Qafqazi said that Tabaderm's special formulation provides benefits beyond a hydrogel dressing, the most important of which are stimulating protein production in the extracellular matrix and accelerating epithelialization, facilitating autolytic debridement, managing wound exudate, increasing angiogenesis in damaged tissue, and moisturizing the wound surface.
Earlier, in January, the knowledge-based company stationed at the Science and Technology Park of Amirkabir University had also acquired the technology for making special dressings for the wounds of Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) patients.
“We have been able to find the formulation of Mepilex dressing (produced in Sweden) in accordance to the recommended international guidelines for EB patients’ dressing,” said Qafqazi at the time.
“We are trying to indigenize this product on a semi-industrial scale with the aim of helping and improving the health of these sensitive and vulnerable patients of our country,” he added.
Elaborating on the advantages and features of the dressing, Qafqazi said, “It is used as a strong absorbent in the effective management of wound discharge, is completely compatible with the skin and easily adapts to the wound site, can be adjusted at the wound site without losing the adhesive properties, and reduces pain and trauma after dressing changes.”
He also introduced ‘Matrix’ dressing containing gold as another product of the company, and said, “The dressing with a structure similar to human skin due to the presence of gold nanoparticles has shown extraordinary antioxidant effects which cause a rapid reduction of wound inflammation. Also, the presence of collagen and other biopolymers in the dressing restrict the growth and mitosis of fibroblast cells and increase of cell migration which accelerates the wound healing process.”
Qafqazi noted that the dressing can be used to treat the 1st and 2nd degree burns, all types of infected wounds, surgical wounds, diabetes and pressure ulcers, and bedsores.
