Iranian Knowledge-Based Firm Produces Laboratory Sample of Zinc Pyrithione for Plastic Industry

TEHRAN (ANA)- Researchers of a knowledge-based company in Iran succeeded in making a laboratory sample and creating the technical know-how for the production of zinc pyrithione for plastic industry and treatment of skin diseases.

“We are now focused on two fields of production of effective pharmaceutical and health substances in the field of treating seborrheic dermatitis (SD) and antifungal products, and production of new polymeric release agents used in the rubber and plastic industries,” said Mehdi Mo’einian, the director of the department for research and commercialization of chemical products of the research center for the development of chemical industries of the Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research (ACECR).

“Creation of a laboratory sample and technical know-how for production of the zinc pyrithione product was carried out for the first time in Iran, and research is being conducted to enhance the scale of the product to the semi-industrial level and its economic production,” he said.

Mo’einian added that with effective cooperation with another knowledge-based company, a plan to create the technical know-how to produce a new polymer release sample used in the country's rubber industry (A 60) is also being implemented.

Zinc pyrithione (or pyrithione zinc) is a coordination complex of zinc. It has fungistatic (inhibiting the division of fungal cells) and bacteriostatic (inhibiting bacterial cell division) properties and is used in the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff.
